Kat Chow. Elise Hu. A recent study on data from a dating app found all women except black women were most drawn to white men, and men of all races with one notable exception prefer Asian women. Researchers recently took data from the Facebook app Are You Interested and found that not only is race a factor in our online dating interests, but particular races get disproportionately high — and low — amounts of interest. The numbers in this chart from Quartz show the percentage of people who responded to a “yes” on the “Are You Interested” app. Data: AYI. The business site Quartz graphed these preferences using data on the percentage of “yes” responses to the “Are you interested? The data suggest some uncomfortable stories about racial preferences in online dating. Back in , the folks over at OKCupid culled through the site’s data and similarly found that race played a big role in who would respond to messages, with some similar and a few different findings. We have a conversation about the data, below, and invite you to join in too.
Dear White Guys: Your Asian Fetish Is Showing
When I was in my second year of university, a stranger approached a friend and me on the streets of Melbourne, asking to photograph us for his website about interracial couples. A little taken aback, we told him we weren’t together but had friends that might fit the bill. He went on to explain that many of his friends were Asian men who thought Anglo-Australian women just weren’t interested in dating them.
His website was his way of showing this wasn’t true. After a fittingly awkward goodbye, I never saw that man or, concerningly, his website again, but the unusual encounter stayed with me. It was the first time someone had given voice to an insecurity I held but had never felt comfortable communicating.
Often, this pairing is seen as a fetish for some and a normal relationship with a label for others. Some Asian American men have admitted that.
At first glance, it seems that hardly anyone does. Everyone is that friend or has friends who download and delete dating apps cyclically. Yet, no matter how much everyone claims to hate them, everyone still seems to have a folder on their phone that contains apps like Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, Raya, Coffee Meets Bagel or whatever other new dating app is currently trending. Admittedly, as an Asian man, I felt an eerie amount of correlation between my experiences and the ones Sky and Jazz described.
The episode opens up relatively optimistically, with a brief discussion about how our generation is the most diverse and open-minded in dating history. It then quickly segues to consider that, despite this seemingly progressive overlook, there are still some statistically significant racial preferences at play. Pointing to data pulled from OKCupid, Tinder and other academic studies, white and Asian women are consistently the highest-rated demographic groups on dating apps.
Meanwhile, Asian men and black women are the lowest-rated and most excluded groups. This, of course, should be no surprise. Dating apps are an easily accessible, digital representation of racial preferences in the real world. This is why dating apps bother me. And even if they were racist, what can you do — call out your friends for not having enough diversity in their online matches?
Odds Favor White Men, Asian Women On Dating App
Let me put it bluntly:. When it comes to dating, it sucks to be an Asian male in the US. After crunching the behavioral data gathered from 25 million users, OkCupid found that Asian guys have it the worst when it comes to online dating.

My interviewees often bring up the fact that they love their partners regardless of what race they are. Yet we cannot completely ignore the reality that Asian males are much less likely to marry outside their race than Asian females.
Researchers Belinda Robnett and Cynthia Feliciano from the University of California analyzed heterosexual internet dating profiles. Asian men were more open to dating other racial groups than those racial groups were to dating them. Meanwhile Hollywood movies and popular television shows give little screen time to interracial couples, much less those involving an Asian male.
Many of my interviewees said they see little-to-no representation of Asian male characters and couples like themselves in the media. Mainstream media outlets in journalism have paid little attention to the issue, and even when it does, tends never to speak directly to Asian men about their lived experiences. See here and here. So it seems Asian Americans and Asian Canadians took to alternative modes of media, media that are accessible to them.
The experience of Asian men is explored much more frequently on online media, on mediums such as blogs and YouTube videos. And this was long before YouTube even existed.

Many Asians have dark skin. In the U. Traditional Chinese cultural and filial values played a part in this, but so did fear of racism. The only women who did make it across? Early Hollywood movies did the rest of the work.

We often take for granted how bad Asian males have it in the dating market in the West, particularly in North America. Many cite the response.
Diverse images of desirability do, in fact, have the power to provoke a fundamental change in the way others think; and not just about desiring and dating Asian men and black women. Hi Patrice. You look so badass in your pictures. That’s the first thing my boyfriend Tian Jun ever said to me. The year was The place: my Tinder inbox. His bio matched the charm and wit of his message and his photos suggested he had good looks, an eclectic social life, and a dope job that required creativity, grit, and ambition.
After breezing through standard routine chit-chat, we discovered that neither of us were on Tinder looking for a significant other. We were merely two busy writers — him for television, me for journalism — who enjoyed meeting new people while also exploring the best city in the world and stuffing our faces at restaurants and bars we’d bookmarked on Yelp. And yet once we got settled in the cozy Brooklyn establishment and disarmed by boozy cake-stuffed milkshakes, our meandering conversation soon anchored itself in our shared geekdom for all things pop culture and a spark was lit.
Have you seen this movie yet? Are you watching that show? The realization that we were actually running late for our respective post-date plans forced us to surface from our deep dive and close out.

An Asian fetish is a strong sexual or romantic preference for persons of Asian descent, especially East or Southeast Asian descent and to some extent South Asian descent. The fetishization of East Asians by people of other ethnicities is sometimes described by the derogatory term yellow fever. Asian women are often stereotyped as being subservient, passive, and quiet.
This portrayal persists today, along with the idea of Asian women—and, to a lesser extent, men—being exotic and submissive. In the afterword to the play M. Butterfly , the writer David Henry Hwang , using the term “yellow fever”, a derogatory pun on the disease of the same name , discusses Caucasian men with a “fetish” for east Asian women.
The pun refers to the color terminology for race , in which persons of East and Southeast Asian heritage are sometimes described as “Yellow people”. The term “yellow fever” describes someone who is inflicted with a disease, implying that someone with an Asian fetish has a sickness. Hwang argues that this phenomenon is caused by stereotyping of Asians in Western society.
The slang term used for a gay man, usually Caucasian, who exclusively dates men of Asian descent is ” rice queen “. In a two-year study on dating preferences among Columbia University students, researchers did not find evidence of a general preference among Caucasian men for Asian women. Furthermore, the study found that there is a significantly higher pairing of Caucasian men with East Asian women because East Asian women are less likely to prefer African-American or Latino men.

What was supposed to be a one-hour coffee date had evolved into a nine-hour marathon. We had a lot in common, having experienced what some might describe as all-American upbringings. By comparison, in , the first year for which detailed data are available, about , newlyweds had done so. The long-term annual growth in newlyweds marrying someone of a different race or ethnicity has led to dramatic increases in the overall number of people who are presently intermarried — including both those who recently married and those who did so years, or even decades, earlier.
Overall increases in intermarriage have been fueled in part by rising intermarriage rates among black newlyweds and among white newlyweds. At the same time, intermarriage has ticked down among recently married Asians and remained more or less stable among Hispanic newlyweds.
